One of the most fascinating things I see in my hypnotherapy practice is this: when someone doesn’t feel heard or believed about their struggles, their subconscious may actually hold onto symptoms—or even intensify them.
Why? Because if they heal, it might feel like they’re proving the other person right—that maybe they weren’t really struggling as much as they said.
The Subconscious Wants to Protect You
Your subconscious mind’s job is self-preservation. It will always try to help you—even if the way it helps does more harm than good.
So if you feel dismissed, invalidated, or unheard, your subconscious might amplify your symptoms as a way of saying:
🚨 “Look, this IS real! Pay attention!”
And this isn’t a conscious decision—it’s happening beneath the surface, completely outside of your awareness.
Let me give you some real-life examples.
The Weight Gain That Wasn’t About Weight
I had a client who came to see me for weight loss. She believed she had gained weight because she had been laid up after an accident—she was hit by a car while riding her bike.
That made sense, right? Less movement, weight gain.
But in hypnosis, we uncovered something deeper.
🚴♀️ After her accident, no one in her family showed up to visit her in the hospital.
She had always grown up in a family where her sister was "the squeaky wheel"—the one who got attention by being in crisis. A few years prior, while my client was on vacation, her sister had threatened suicide. The entire family rallied around her, traveling to where she was to make sure she was okay.
But when my client was in the hospital after a serious accident?
💔 No one came.
💔 No one treated it as a big deal.
💔 No one noticed how much she was struggling.
In hypnosis, she had a powerful realization.
She said:
"How big do I need to become before anybody notices that I have a problem?"
Her subconscious had linked her weight gain to being seen. It was a signal, a message:
💡 “I’m struggling. Somebody notice me.”
And this is why she had been unable to lose the weight—because subconsciously, she still needed it.
Once we helped her subconscious recognize that she didn’t need to prove anything to anyone, the weight started to come off naturally—without struggle.
The Work Injury That Wouldn’t Heal—Until It Was Believed
Another client came to see me with pain from a workplace injury. She had been injured on the job, but her boss refused to acknowledge that anything had happened.
She kept pushing for recognition, but her boss dismissed her complaints.
And what happened?
Her pain got worse.
It was as if her subconscious was saying:
🔥 “I need to prove this is real. If you won’t believe me, I’ll make it undeniable.”
Her symptoms continued to intensify—until finally, her boss admitted that the accident had happened.
💡 The moment she was acknowledged? The pain disappeared.
Because she no longer needed it.
Are You Holding Onto Something Without Realizing It?
This can happen with all kinds of struggles:
✔️ Anxiety that won’t go away – Because no one believed how much stress you were under
✔️ Depression that lingers – Because you were told to "just cheer up"
✔️ Chronic fatigue – Because people dismissed how exhausted and overwhelmed you felt
✔️ Physical pain that stays long after an injury – Because your struggle was minimized
💡 If your subconscious believes that healing would mean admitting your struggle "wasn’t real," it may hold onto your symptoms—even when you desperately want to let them go.
How Hypnotherapy Helps You Release What No Longer Serves You
This isn’t about telling your subconscious, “Okay, we’re done now.” That doesn’t work.
Instead, hypnotherapy helps you uncover the real reason your mind is holding on—so we can communicate with the subconscious in a way that allows it to finally let go.
💡 We validate the experience.
💡 We acknowledge that the struggle was real.
💡 And we help the subconscious realize that you don’t have to keep suffering in order to be heard.
The result? The symptom—the weight, the pain, the anxiety—finally releases, because it no longer needs to prove a point.
✨ If this resonates with you, let’s talk. You don’t have to hold onto struggle just to be seen. Hypnotherapy can help.
